Tacora Cello Quartet

Tacora Cello Quartet explores the rich world of folk and earthy sounds, showcasing the cello's versatility. Their repertoire includes original arrangements and compositions, blending Latin American folk and tango, with Celtic traditions and European popular music. The ensemble brings four cellos together for a fun and heartfelt performance, filled with music, stories, and lots of good energy.

And here we are again! After a few months of social media break, we’re back with both a sad and a happy piece of news.

First, we want to thank our dear cello mate Joshua for the great times together. He stepped out of the quartet for personal reasons (moving back to Spain 🇪🇸), and we will miss him a lot, as a wonderful cellist and our media and coffee geek 😜Although we’re sure our paths will cross again very soon!

At the same time, we’re delighted to introduce our new member: Diogo Martins! Coming from Portugal 🇵🇹, Diogo brings a fresh perspective and a unique insight into cello playing. We’re already well on our way to getting to know each other, and it feels like a great match!

For now, let’s travel to Galicia (Spain) and meet Emilio Corral, the bagpiper who wrote Muiñeira de Bergantiños back in the day. A lively dance that, especially now, reminds us how important it is to celebrate, preserve and protect the treasures we’ve been given: the music, landscapes, the nature 🙏 🌿✨

Last Sunday, Tacora Cello Duo performed at the Dorpskerkconcerten in Leimuiden. The church, catalogued as a Rijksmonument, was fully restored in 2012 and has since become a meeting point for the town, hosting a variety of activities, including this wonderful concert series.

This tune carries an interesting background: it’s thought to have originated as a "fado batido" from Portugal, where stamping feet set the rhythm ("batir" means "to stamp" in Portuguese). Over time, as it crossed borders and evolved, it transformed into the lively Spanish rhythm we know today.

Some people say that El Candil has its roots in a fado batido - a Portuguese style that involves stamping the foot on the ground (“bater” means “to stamp” in Portuguese). Given Extremadura’s proximity to Portugal, this makes perfect sense! Over time, the rhythm evolved into a more dynamic Spanish adaptation 💃🏻
